In partnership with GULF, Mitsubishi Power is driving Thailand’s energy transformation through mega power generation projects supporting long-term growth and decarbonization.

POWERING
THAILAND’S ENERGY
FUTURE
Challenge
Thailand’s national energy roadmap calls for the reduction of carbon emissions in the power sector to 41.5 million tons by 2050. At the same time, electricity demand is projected to rise steadily, driven by ongoing industrial development and urbanization.
Natural gas – which today accounts for over 60% of Thailand’s electricity generation – stands as a key solution to this increasing demand. It is a dispatchable baseload source stabilizing power systems and complementing the growing share of variable renewables.
To maximize the use of this fuel, Thailand is pursuing the deployment of high-efficiency natural gas-fired power plants.

Sriracha Power Plant, Hin Kong Power Plant

Solution
For nearly two decades, Mitsubishi Power has been working with leading Thai independent power producer Gulf Development Public Co., Ltd. (GULF) to drive progress in the country’s energy sector.
GULF first tapped Mitsubishi Power to render EPC services for its GTCC power plants in Nong Saeng and Uthai in 2011. Since then, we have been collaborating to develop a new generation of GTCC facilities designed to address Thailand’s evolving energy policy and targets. Despite challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic, the Sriracha, Pluak Daeng, and Hin Kong GTCC Power Plants were all completed on schedule.
Sriracha Power Plant & Pluak Daeng Power Plant: The 5,300 MW mega combined cycle project comprises two facilities in Chonburi and Rayong provinces. These power plants completed in 2022 and 2024 are home to the first eight M701JAC gas turbines installed in Southeast Asia. This model has a combined cycle efficiency greater than 64% and meets stringent standards for reducing carbon emissions. It also operates flexibly, with shorter startup time and superior load-following capability.
Hin Kong Power Plant: The 1,400 MW GTCC facility located in Ratchaburi province was developed by a joint venture between GULF and RATCH Group. The plant features two M701JAC gas turbines, which entered commercial operation in March 2024 and January 2025, respectively. The plant is now maintained by Mitsubishi Power through a 25-year long-term service agreement.
Results
This long-term partnership has focused on providing reliable, flexible, and future-ready generation assets that are aligned with Thailand’s energy and climate goals.
- Nearly 7,000 MW of installed capacity in Thailand
- 10 M701JAC gas turbines installed across the three projects – the largest fleet in Southeast Asia
- Over 150,000 cumulative M701JAC operating hours achieved as of 2025
- Significant contributions to customer’s financial performance, with GULF’s core profit jumping YoY following the successful start of commercial operations of JAC units in Pluak Daeng and Hin Kong in 2024
